The Sacrifice of the Cross is to be Celebrated

Philippians 2:5-10 says, “Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name.” Christ’s obedience to His father led him to the cross, a cross by which He was been exalted and by which we can be set free from our bondage. For this reason, His wooden cross and His painful crucifixion are things to be celebrated, because these things are the price that He willfully paid for us.

It was a tool meant for pain and persecution, but in a twist of glorious irony, the Savior, Jesus Christ, forever transformed it into a symbol of His victory over sin, evil, and death. All believers can agree, then, that the cross is a mighty symbol, something to look at and find hope and joy within. That’s why we see it everywhere. Whether on churches or on cathedrals, in homes or in offices, and on necks or on wrists, the cross can be seen on display some two-thousand years after Christ’s crucifixion took place.

As such, the crucifix takes it a step further. Through the crucifix, we can look upon the Savior at His most vulnerable, and we can consider the pain He experienced just for the chance that we would believe, be redeemed, and share in eternal life with Him. A Catholic crucifix makes the crucifixion a very real matter before our very eyes, but, as believers who are confident in Christ’s victory and His resurrection, we know that crucifixion is far from final. Both the Catholic cross and the Catholic crucifix are symbol’s Christ’s glory.

We also know the cross to be the cornerstone of our belief and faith. Saint Paul the Apostle writes in 1 Corinthians 2:1-5, “And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembled, and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.” It can be easy to get caught up in it all, but Saint Paul knew that the key to our faith was never in wisdom or discipline - though both of those are wonderful things; the truth is that the meaning of our faith is found in the cross, Christ’s sacrifice upon it, and His resurrection that was to follow. After all, doesn’t Saint Paul continue in 1 Corinthians 15:16-17, “For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.” The cross is where Jesus Christ declared His authority over death, and because of His victory there, our faith can stand. This is the reason, then, that the cross has stood the test of time as the universal symbol that unites all believers across the world and to every end of the earth.

We know it to be true; the cross unites us. From the East to the West and everywhere in between, when you find a cross, there will certainly be a believer not far from it.
