Christmas: The Birth of Christ or a Season of Giving?

As Christians, we know that the true story of Christmas is the birth of Jesus. Matthew 1:20-23 says, “Behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.’ All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: ‘Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel’ (which means, God with us.” We know this to be what it’s all about; without these accounts of the Savior’s birth, there would be no Christmas. Still, in modern day, especially in secular circles, Christmas can be seen more like a season of giving, Santa Claus, Christmas presents, and so on.

However, we would like to suggest that viewing Christmas as a time to give is more innocent than it seems. Make no mistake, we believe that the birth of Christ is what puts the “Christ” in “Christmas”, but giving is an important aspect of the story as well. Consider these the account of the wise men in only the next chapter; Matthew 2:1-2 & 10-11 says, “Now, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, ‘where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him...when they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.” Christ has always been worthy of our worship, even as an infant. We are more than happy to offer Christian jewelry celebrating His arrival in our world, but we also consider it a way of carrying on a tradition of gift giving that was established right then and there.

Indeed, the wise men offered Jesus and His family gifts, and we believe that is meaningful. These were precious gifts as well; the wise men didn’t give because they might as well - they gave the best they could: gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Therefore, giving gifts on Christmas does have a foundation in scripture, so if you wish to exchange gifts, go on! Just remember, it is greater to give out of the kindness of your heart than out of obligation. Further, as Jesus Himself is recorded to have said in Acts 20:35, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

Let us not forget as well, giving was truly established on Christmas by God the Father. After all, John 3:16 is the most widely known verse of all, and it says, “For God so loved the world, the he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” The true gift of Christmas was not gold, frankincense, or myrrh for the Savior, it was the Savior in and of Himself! Many have called Him “the greatest gift ever given,” and that’s the case for His birth, His life, and His death.

All in all, then, when we ask the question whether Christmas is a season of giving, it is fair to say that it is, but let’s always be sure to remember what makes it so. We would never discourage exchanging gifts with family and friends, and, after all, we are more than happy to be a provider of Christian gifts for many people. We have sterling silver Christian jewelry of all kinds in addition to our sterling silver Christmas jewelry, but we also have a variety of Christmas products - Christmas Bible bookmarks, pass along cards, olive wood ornaments, nativities, you name it! We hope that we can encourage you that giving gifts on Christmas is a virtuous thing, as it is an opportunity to celebrate the greatest gift, and if any of our products interest you as a gift for someone, we are also more than happy to provide you with the opportunity to give.

The Christmas Season

Of course, if we think about it, it might seem odd when we say that Christmas is a season of giving. After all, isn’t Christmas a moment in history and a date on the calendar? Well, though that is true, many cultures have Christmas on their mind for many weeks before the actual date of Christmas comes to pass. We believe there’s no harm in this either; hasn’t it been said in Philippians 4:8, “Finally, brothers, whatever it true, whatever is honorable, whatever if just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Having the birth of the Savior at the forefront of your mind is enriching and fulfilling to your faith, and there’s no reason to delegate that to only one day out of the year.

That in mind, we believe we have Christmas jewelry designs available that are relevant for the Christmas season as a whole. If you found this page outside the Christmas season, why not take advantage in the offseason and get a beautiful sterling silver necklace you can wear on your neck in the days leading up to Christmas? Either way, it is our hope that you can have something from us - whether a piece of Christian jewelry or something else entirely - that reminds you of the greatest gift every time that you look at it.
