Written for God’s people in Babylon during the Exilic Period, this verse would have been an especially radical declaration in the midst of what they were going through! This was written to people who had lost their home and many of the freedoms they had, even the freedom to worship God openly for a time. Even with all that they had been through, God assured them that He had greater things in store for them. Let us remember this on our own journeys: God has plans for us full of blessings and hope, no matter how hard things may be for now. We are indeed called according to His purpose, so we can have faith that everything we go through, no matter how small or how difficult, He is weaving it all together for our good; He sees what we can’t see, and He knows what will come together to be best for us! In all the good that we do in this world - in every positive difference that we make - let us remember that we are doing it all that the world’s attention may be drawn to the God who inspires us to do so. It could be said, then, that our highest purpose is to bring God glory before all, our other purposes and tasks only acting as a means by which we can do so.
