Writing the Vision & Making it Plain

God speaks to the prophet Habakkuk in Habakkuk 2:2-3, which says, “And the Lord answered me: ‘Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it. For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end - it will not lie. If it seems slow, wait for it; it will come; it will not delay.’” We are called to not only listen for the Lord’s guidance, but to share it as well. It is good to hear from Him for our own encouragement, but as God’s Church, we are called to love and support one another. This is what God is getting at in speaking to Habakkuk. It is God’s desire for Habakkuk to hear and remember the vision, of course, but He also desires that he write this vision as a blessing and a source of strength for others who read it.

Now, this passage is referring to a specific vision for a specific generation of Israel and Judah’s history, but the premise as a whole endures even today. After, isn’t this essentially what scripture is: visions given to people of God, written down by those people, and preserved in the Bible, a collection of God’s Word spoken and written over a span of thousands of years? Indeed, and there is perhaps no better example of “Write the vison; make it plain...” than the practice and literary art of Bible translation. In modern day, there are still speakers and readers of niche languages getting access to a Bible they can understand for the very first time. Even beyond that, a way that God’s Word is made plain is through new translations in existing languages, designed to achieve both greater accuracy and smoother readability for modern readers of scripture.

There is power in reading the scripture. After all, Paul writes in 2 Timothy 3:16-17, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” Even more so, there is power in doing what it says, as James indicates in James 1:22-25, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.

Now, let us divert our attention to the Great Commission in order to really bring this all together. In case you haven’t heard it in a while or its simply an unfamiliar passage to you, here is the Great Commission, the final command of Jesus before His ascension to the right hand of the Father, chronicled in Matthew 28:18-20, which says, “And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’” These words are often applied in an evangelistic context, but, while evangelism to reach the lost and invite them into the family of God is indeed a worthy cause, it is important to understand that the Great Commission does not stop there. Jesus has made it His followers’ responsibility to initialize discipleship, but He has also given His followers the responsibility of teaching them in His ways. If we look at 2 Timothy 3:16 again, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,” we can see that scripture is of great value in completing the task our God has set before us. Not only is it a great thing to introduce others to God’s principles, but it is also great to listen to God and share what he has to say with others, writing the vision and making it plain “so that he may run who reads it.”
