“Do you ever feel like a plastic bag? Drifting through the wind. Wanting to start again.” – Katy Perry.

Questioning your purpose and identity can often feel just like Ms. Perry has described; a plastic bag with nowhere to go and no meaning in life. Purpose and uniqueness are what drive and make us passionate about life. If we lose what drives us, life can feel pointless - like we truly have no reason to live.

So, what do you do when you have this feeling, this question of who am I?

Well, you find out who you are, of course! It’s easier said than done. It is easy to forget who we are and where we come from when the world is shouting at us who should and shouldn’t be. It’s even easier to forget who God says we are if we are not continually reading His Word. His Word is the literal instruction manual for human life, but that is the last place we turn to.

When you feel like you don’t know who you are, you should turn to the Creator. For example, when you buy a new product, you don’t always know how to use it. Without explicit instruction it seems purposeless. If you don’t understand the point or purpose of something you bought or are about to buy, you turn to the creator, whoever invented it. Whether that be reading the back of the box, phoning a friend, or checking an online forum, we will try almost anything to get the purpose of the product; but for some reason, the last place we turn is the instruction manual. But isn’t that where you find the most information about the product? Isn’t that where you get a diagram and a step by step tutorial of how to use the product?  Every detail about the product is in the instruction manual that comes with it, yet we turn to outside sources to explain what the product does.

Isn’t that what we do with our purpose and identity? We turn to everything but the instruction manual that the creator gave to us. God gave us His Word to know exactly who we are and who were meant to be. Yet we turn to friends, family, social media, blogs (but I am still glad you’re here ;)). How can we expect to understand our purpose when we turn to everyone but the one who created us?

So then, what does God say my purpose is?

He tells us who we are and the fact that we have a purpose in his word. I’m going to give you ten times in the bible where God tells us who we are and what our purpose is.

  • You are a Child of God

Above all things, you are a child of God. No one can take that away from you. No matter how the world shifts, you will always be God’s child. Even when you are questioning who you are, you still are who you are. Your identity as a child of God doesn’t go away or change.
2 Corinthian 6:18

  • You are royal
1 peter 5:9

As sons and daughters of the king of kings, you are heirs to His throne. You are princes and princesses. You are royalty! You have access to almost everything your father has access to through just giving Him a call.

  • You are a witness

Isaiah 43:10
God has chosen us to be witnesses to people in our circle, in our city, in our country, and worldwide! He has chosen us to be witnesses of His goodness and all he has done for us.

  • You are strong!

2 Corinthians 12:10
Even when we are at our weakest, we are made strong through Christ. This doesn’t change about us. Once we have given our life to Christ, we no longer have to rely on our strength but God’s power.

  • You are set apart

Jeremiah 1:5
Before you even came into the world, God had already set you apart for His plan and purpose. The King of Kings, Creator of the universe, knew you before you were even a twinkle in your mother’s eye, and He carefully crafted you, chose you, and set you apart from everyone else.

  • We are a source of light

Matthew 5:14
God has called you to be a light in a dark world! Not only a light for all the world to see but a light that cannot be hidden.

  • We are branches

John 15:5
Which means we are the direct source to produce fruit. We can provide nutrients to anyone connect to us when we are connected to God.

  • We are Examples

Exodus 9:16

  • We are disciple makers

Matthew 28:19-20
God called us to go out and not only bring people to Him but also bring people that will bring more people.

  • We are friends of God.

John 15:13-16
God treats us as a friend. He loves us, He knows us, and He speaks to us just like we are His friends. He chose us specifically to be friends with! He laid His life down because He loved us so much. “There is no greater love than to lay one’s life down for a friend.”
