The Blessing of the Word and the Blessing of Rain

Scripture is a wonderful gift! We are surely blessed with God’s divinely inspired Word; by it, we the whole world may learn and be affirmed. Isaiah 55:10-11 says,

“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.”

God, through his prophet, Isaiah, has compared His word to rain. Even within the context of these verses, the imagery is rich, but it gets even richer the more we look at rain as a theme in the Bible.

Rain in the Promised Land

The scriptures abound with stories about rain - Noah’s Ark, Israel’s drought in the time of Elijah, and Jesus calming the storm. Generally speaking, rain is representative of God’s blessing and favor, and it was a way of demonstrating to God’s people that they had to depend on Him.

The easiest way to see this in Biblical history is by comparing the Promised Land to Egypt. Israel was captive in Egypt for 430 years, meaning that the generation of Exodus and many of the generations before had come to accept Egypt’s way as the “normal” way. Egypt was a civilization built around the Nile River, the land around the river was always of fertile soil, so there was no question of whether or not each year’s harvest would be a good one. For this reason, Egyptians of the time didn’t have to have faith that their harvest would be blessed; the Nile’s constant flow was a matter of fact.

Israel grew used to this, so when God took them from the land of the Nile to the land of the Jordan, things would have been intimidating. They were free from slavery, but they were also leaving the land centered around the most dependable river in the world. Israel was no such land. It was a beautiful land “flowing with milk and honey,” but not with flowing with water.

The Promised Land, and such, was not a land of river agriculture, but rain. They had to wait for heaven’s rain if they wanted a successful harvest, which was by no means guaranteed.

There was no need to fear, however. Before sending them into the land, God have His people a promise, found in Leviticus 26:3-5, which says,

“If you follow My statutes and faithfully observe My commands, I will give you rain at the right time, and the land will yield its produce, and the trees of the field will bear their fruit. Your threshing will continue until grape harvest, and the grape harvest will continue until sowing time; you will have plenty of food to eat and live securely in your land.”

The Promised Land, then, did not represent the promise of easy living, but instead it was a land where God’s people could fully depend on Him to meet all of their needs. If they trusted Him and demonstrated that trust by following His commands, the rain was sure to come. Rain, then, was a blessing from God, and a sign of His favor.

Rain and Dependence

This theme continues from that point throughout scripture. When Israel turns their face from God and His Word in the days of Elijah the Prophet, the land is plagued by a long drought; only by the prophet’s prayers and the people’s return to faith does God’s rain return.

With this relationship established over hundreds of year, it should come as no surprise that the disciples of the New Testament were terrified in Mark 4:37-41, which tells,

“A fierce storm arose, and the waves were breaking over the boat, so that that the boat was already being swamped...He [Jesus] got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Silence! Be Still!’ The wind ceased, and there was a great calm...and they [the disciples] were terrified and asked one another, ‘Who then is this? Even the wind and the sea obey Him!”

Jesus established in that moment that His authority was that of the Son of God, giving and withholding rain at will.

Now, all of this said, we can look back to Isaiah 55:10-11 with a richer sense of Biblical context. If rain was an expression of God’s love, blessing, and favor, then so His words must be as well. Every word of God is a blessing to our hearts, and just as rain bears fruit, so too will His word. We mustn’t take for granted how magnificent a thing it is to have access to the God’s Word, the Bible. Let’s read it like we depend on it, because we do!

What Does this Have to Do with Bulk Bookmarks?

This is all great stuff, but you might wonder, “What does this have to do with bulk bookmarks?” That is a question that we are more than happy to answer! One of our primary goals at Logos Trading Post is that we encourage people to read God’s Word every day, and one way that we accomplish that is by creating more and more opportunities for the words of scripture to be in front of people. These Christian bookmarks can be used as Bible bookmarks or otherwise, but the point is that the scriptures printed on them create another opportunity to see what God has to say. With that in mind, our bulk bookmarks / wholesale bookmarks are a wonderful opportunity. Businesses interested in purchasing and selling our bulk bookmarks can help us achieve the goal of getting scripture in front of more people, but so can individuals who simply want to buy a variety of bookmarks to give as blessings to others. Whatever your needs, remember that God’s Word, like rain, is a blessing not to be taken for granted!
