The Words of God are Words of Life

Deuteronomy 8:3 says,

“Man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.”

That means the Word of God is more than just ink on paper or prose preserved through history; it is our sustenance, and by it we can find true life. In fact, Jesus Himself even echoes this reference of scripture when he contends with the Devil in the deserts of Judea. Jesus, even in His great hunger after a fast of forty days, shares this exchange with his tempter in Matthew 4:3-4, which says,

“And the tempter came and said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.’

“But he answered, ‘It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’’”

Jesus understood in fullness that the Word of God is what fulfills us and gives us life; by the truth of God’s guidance and the revelation of Himself, we may live. On that note, there is one more scriptural concept to which the “Word of God” can refer. God was a mysterious being in the past - confined to His temple and to His Ark of the Covenant, only to be consulted with via a high priest. However, God, through His Word, made it such that He could be known deeply by all. Yes, He achieved this through the divine inspiration of the Holy Bible, but there was another word through which He has revealed Himself in an ultimately divine way. Of course, we are referring to John’s first chapter, declaring in John 1:1-5 & 9-14 & 17-18,

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it...

“The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God...

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth...For from his fullness we have all receive, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.”

Indeed, though the scriptures do reveal God in truth by means of the Holy Spirit sent to us, the Son of God - the Word of God - has given us the chance to see God truly revealed through Him.

Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
