Wow, not only has God’s love and Christ’s sacrifice given us the opportunity to be one of His disciples, but we can actually become a part of His family, becoming a child of God just as Jesus Christ was the pure, first Son of God.

As Paul the apostle writes in 2 Corinthians 5:17-21, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. Indeed, the sacrifice on the cross was His expression of love, while His love for us and creation was the motive behind it. Still, let us remember, thanks to His love and His giving of His son, God has made us Christians and His children, but He has also made us so much more than that. Peter writes in 1 Peter 2:9 that we are “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession.” 1 Corinthians 3:16 says that we are “God’s temple”. Jesus Himself said in Matthew 5:14 that we are “The light of the world.” Challenge coins are designed to be identifiers that show others that their possessors are of a select group or rank, and our Christian challenge coins are much the same, identifying us as all of the above and more thanks to God’s great love and grace for us.

However, all of these titles for those who believe in God have a greater purpose. Let’s look back at our reference from 2 Corinthians 5, specifically verses 18-19, which say, “All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.” God has done His part, reconciling us to Himself, making us children of God among other things, but it is our turn to do our part next! God did what we could not, giving His son out of love for us, but now we get to tell the world of what He has done so that they can believe in Him.

Therefore, our distinction as Christians is not a mere badge. Instead, it should be a light for others; others should be able to look at who we have become in Christ and realize that there is something that sets us apart - that something being His Spirit and His righteousness, bought for us through His struggle upon the cross.
