LOGOS TRADING POST - MEDICAL COINS

The Healer’s Hands

Psalm 41:3 says, “The Lord sustains him on his sickbed; in his illness you restore him to full health.” We are more than pleased to offer our support to those doing the Lord’s work in medicine! God is a healer; after all, Peter assures us in light of the cross in 1 Peter 2:24, writing, “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.” Even still, though we believe in a God who can heal all wounds and ailments, we are also His followers to whom He says in Mark 16:17-18, “And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.” What is noteworthy about this passage in this case is that, though God is indeed a healer and a Savior capable of all these things, He has given us task as His followers in the process of bringing healing to creation and to one another. Yes, Christ is certainly the miracle worker, but we are a part of that; after all, Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 12:27, “Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.” Sometimes when Jesus reaches out His hand, we just might be the hand that he reaches out!

That in mind, let us keep in mind that God ultimately is our healer, thanks to the blood Jesus was willing to shed for us and the everlasting life He was able to secure for us and wishes to share with us. However, let us also keep in mind that God has called us to play a role in healing one another, and no one else in the whole world better exemplify this than those that devote themselves to the practice of medicine, whether as a nurse or doctor or anything in between! As such, these special Christian challenge coins specifically for Medical Doctors and Registered Nurses are designed as way to show them honor for all that they do in the Kingdom of God, so we would most certainly encourage you to get one of these challenge coins as a gift if there’s someone in your life devoted to the practice of medicine!

The Serpent in the Desert

Now, something you may have noticed when looking at these Christian challenge coins is that they each have a variation of a symbol: a serpent wrapped around a stake. This is also reasonable common imagery in medical settings in general, but its origin is strictly Biblical. To be exact, it originates from a story found in Numbers 21.

While the people of Israel wanders in the wilderness, troubles never far from them, they grow weary and lose their patience for their leader, Moses. Numbers 21:4-5 says, “From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way. And the people spoke against God and against Moses, ‘Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.’” Many times the Israelites leverage complaints of this kind, comparing their present situation to Egypt, a land in which they were enslaved but their situation was steady and predictable. It was God’s desire that the people trusted Him and the leader He had raised up in Moses, but they instead continued to believe they had made a mistake by choosing to follow. Both God’s answer and the people’s response are found in verses 6-7, “Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. And the people came to Moses and said, ‘We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you. Pray to the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us.’ So Moses prayed for the people.” The people did bring the trouble upon themselves, but they also saw their error and repented, and God is faithful to forgive those who turn back to Him. Verses 8-9 complete the story, saying, “And the Lord said to Moses, ‘Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he see it, shall live.’ So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.”

Thanks to Our Brothers and Sisters in Christ

All in all, this serpent on a pole that appears on our Christian challenge coins for nurses and doctors is not only a symbol of God’s forgiveness and providence, but of His power to heal as well. We think it is a great symbol, then, to demonstrate the value of the difference our fellow Christian doctors and nurses make every single day. They show us all what it means to be the hands and feet of Jesus in a very special way, bringing health and life to people for God’s glory.
