Finer Than All Pearls and Gems

Jesus says in Matthew 13:45-46, “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.” We are committed to carrying jewelry of the highest quality, and we hope you’ve found what you’ve sought at Logos Trading Post, just as the merchant of this parable found and secured the precious pearl he was looking for!

Even still, we are proud of our Christian jewelry, but we know that it simply cannot compare with the “pearl of great value” that Jesus was talking about, which is “the kingdom of heaven.” It is more than primary that we seek the kingdom of heaven first of all. Let us not forget His words of a few chapters prior, in Matthew 6:31-33, “Therefore, do not be anxious saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Further, we can see the importance of being fervent in our search of the Kingdom of God through the famous words of the prophet Jeremiah, written in Jeremiah 29:11-13, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.”

Therefore, above all, it is of the utmost importance that we are always seeking Him; without that connection, all of life loses its meaning and purpose. This shouldn’t be a source of pressure, though; take it as an encouragement, because God has made Himself and His Kingdom available. After all, the most known verse in all of scripture, John 3:16 tells us, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish by have eternal life,” and verse 17 continues, “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him.” Yes, God has told us that seeking Him and His Kingdom is primary, but we have guidance as to how to do that: believing in the Son, Jesus, and heeding His words. In John 14:1-2 & 6-7, Jesus tells us, “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?...I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

The Pursuit of the Kingdom of Happiness of Earth

However, let’s not take this too far. We must seek first the Kingdom of God, that much is absolutely true. Still, some have taken this too mean that any pursuit on earth or any pleasures we experience in our life on earth are futile, verses like Ecclesiastes 2:11 providing argument by saying, “Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun.” We can’t ignore this sentiment; indeed, compared with the things of God, the things of Earth are of minimal importance.

However, let us not forget that our personal desires are important to God. God is highly principled, but He is intimate enough to hear us and understand us. After all, the author of Hebrews writes in Hebrews 4:14-15, “Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.” This is not to say that our desires under heaven are “weaknesses”; we simply want to demonstrate that Jesus, our mediator to God, understands us and all the things that make us human, having experienced it for Himself. After all, let’s look at Psalm 37:4, which says, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” This echoes the principle of the verse that started this discussion, Matthew 6:33: “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” A balance exists, then, between our pursuit of the Kingdom and our other desires. We must be sure that the Kingdom and God’s righteousness have primacy in our pursuits, but God is understanding of our needs and of the other desires of our hearts.

Jewelry and the Kingdom of God

All in all, the reason we brought this subject forth for discussion is because it relates to things we want compared with things that we need - jewelry, even Christian jewelry, in this case would be more of a want than a need. That said, we want to assure you that the desire to accessorize with Christian jewelry and to give others Christian gifts is entirely reasonable! As a matter of fact, wearing Christian jewelry may even strengthen your faith and remind you of the God you pursue. Both our birthstone jewelry and our Christian jewelry in general are designed to point to God, with many of the designs being reminiscent of the cross of other Biblical symbols. Therefore, if you desire to dress yourself well, don’t be ashamed of that. God is there with you in the desires of your heart. Seek His Kingdom and His righteousness first of all, and you may find yourself surprised with all the other desires of yours that fall right into place, because He absolutely loves you!
