In the Greco-Roman world shortly following the death and resurrection of Christ, Paul, an apostle and missionary on His behalf, finishes his letter to the Ephesians with a profound exhortation, an exhortation that should be heeded by all believers, not merely the Christians of the apostle Paul’s time in history: “Put on the full armor of God.”
Indeed, the spiritual power found in the symbolic armor of God can be felt meaningfully in every walk of life, and it is in itself such a meaningful symbol that we here at Logos Trading Post have decided to create a collection of challenge coins specifically dedicated to these tools of Christian spiritual warfare. As such, please consider getting at least one of these coins if not all of them; they can serve you continually by affirming your faith and reminding you to daily put on the whole armor of God. Each piece of the armor is full of deep meaning and is worth meditating upon in its own right. That being said, we would like to share a bit about each piece that contributes to the whole armor of God; we sincerely hope this can help you make an informed decision by clarifying exactly what these coins represent, but even more so we hope that by sharing a bit about God’s word, your faith can be further enriched today.
The Believer’s Armor of God Scripture
To begin, let’s look at our principal armor of God scripture, Ephesians 6:10-17, which proudly encourages,
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rules, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, stand firm.
“Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one, and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
Before we get into the pieces of the armor of God, there are some important considerations to have about the nature of the armor itself. Paul claims the full armor of God is used to defend against the devil’s schemes, in a battle - not against physically present enemies, but against spiritual forces that are at work throughout our world. As such, it is not a corporeal armor - not wearable in any physical sense. If it were, we would be happy to sell it to you and support the Kingdom of God, but alas, it is instead a spiritual symbol to take with you in your heart. However, it has no shortage of applicable power, and by faith we can still be clothed by it - much in the same way that we are “clothed with righteousness.” It is symbolic, but that symbol represents a very real activity of faith.
The Pieces of Our Armor of God
Now, without further ado, if we are to put on the whole armor of God as Paul suggests, we must know its components. These are: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the gospel of peace (worn as shoes), the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit. All of these are key and beneficial to each and every believer; Paul said to put on the whole armor of God, not just part. Therefore, allow us to share a bit about these pieces of armor, hopefully enriching your faith along the way.
First mentioned is the belt of truth, which is to say that truth should be tied around us - or surrounding us - at all times. We do not want our lives to be defined by the devil’s lies; truth is a necessity in any purposeful life. Truth is even one of the terms that Jesus used to describe Himself in John 14:6: “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” God can be counted on to speak the truth and engrave it in your heart because He is truth. Therefore, a very practical way to gird yourself with truth is to consult and meditate upon God’s living word.
The second is the breastplate of righteousness. Indeed, as mentioned above, clothing oneself with righteousness is an idea found elsewhere, not just the armor of God scripture in Ephesians. However, it is especially worth noting that Ephesians isn’t even the first mention of a “breastplate of righteousness.” Isaiah 59:17 mentions “righteousness as a breastplate,” but it is God who puts it on. By Christ’s sacrifice and resurrection, we can, by grace, clothe ourselves in His righteousness. As such, we should allow our identity to be found in Him.
Next is the Gospel (good news) of Peace, which Paul urges be worn as shoes. Again, Paul has actually repeated an idea found in Isaiah (so he certainly knew his scripture!), Isaiah 52:7 to be exact, which says “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace.” Paul even references this again in Romans 10:15. It’s no coincidence that the gospel is represented with shoes, either. It is meant to be shared, so wearing these shoes represents the willingness to stand upon and go share the gospel.
Next is the shield of faith. Psalm 18:2 says, “The Lord is my protector.” Indeed, the shield is a protective instrument, and utilizing it is as simple as having the simple, unwavering faith that God will give you the protection you need. Yes, it is our responsibility to put on the full armor of God and stand against the devil, but He is ultimately the one to whom we owe the victory.
Next is the helmet of salvation, which also happens to be mentioned right alongside the breastplate of righteousness in Isaiah 59:17. As such, it is God’s helmet that we are permitted to wear; it is by His might that we have salvation from brokenness, sin, and death. Be confident in that, and let it cover your head.
Finally is the sword of the Spirit, a piece of the armor of God that some have pointed out is the only part primarily built for offense. It is true, but we mustn’t confuse offense for needless strife. There is a whole world around us filled with many people completely unarmored and vulnerable, thus, wearing our shoes of the gospel of peace, it is best that we go out, willing to fight back against the spiritual strongholds of this world, with the Holy Spirit is our strength and guide to fighting the good fight of faith.
