The Timeless Word of God

If you’re a parent, you know what a wonderful thing it is to teach your child about the goodness of God. His Word, of course, is an essential part of this process, so we should children verses as often as possible to remember that they may be encouraged and strengthened in faith. Romans 15:4 says, “For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” Scripture was indeed written long ago, but its worth remains even in the lives of the next generation.

The scriptures are timeless. Another way to say this is that the Word of God is living, and the word is indeed referred to in this way in Hebrews 4:12, which says, “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Yes, the Word is alive! This is poetic in the since that Jesus, the “Word” as He is called in John Chapter 1, is the resurrected Savior, but it is also true in reference to the power of scripture. The very same scriptures taught by your parents’ generation were used among early Christians in the form of Church epistles, and these scriptures continue to have the power to reach the souls of the generations to come.

What Can I Teach My Kids?

Of course, for some, instilling the discipline of studying scripture into the minds of the next generation can be intimidating. Many parents find themselves overwhelmed by the wealth of daily tasks they find for themselves, with seemingly too little time remaining for Bible reading once the lunches are packed and everyone’s been dropped off for their different sports practices and dress rehearsals. Still, as our kids are responsible to honor us, we are to honor them as well by giving them a healthy, Godly upbringing. Psalm 78:4 says, “We will not hide them from their children, but to tell the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.” It is not only a responsibility you have to your children, but it also brings great honor to God when you share the Bible and the good news of all that He has done with your children.

Now, though it may be ideal to spend an hour every day gathered around the living room reading the scriptures together (always keeping your place with Christian Bookmarks from Logos Trading Post, of course!) that might prove unwieldy and impractical. The point of spiritual disciplines such as reading scripture is that they are sustainable faith builders; it might be exciting to declare, “I am going to read the Bible with my kids three hours per day, pray every five minutes, and read a spiritual book every day!” but it is difficult to believe that a person won’t burn out on that routine quickly. It is not your responsibility then to be a superhuman with the endurance of a track star and the superpower to create days longer than 24-hours, but it is your responsibility to find practical, sustainable ways to make scripture a consistent part of your child’s life.

The simplest way to do this is to make it simply unavoidable. As your child grows and learns to walk in his or her own faith, they may not find the opportunity to open up their physical copy of the Bible every single day. However, you can supplement their exposure to scripture with other things, such as décor on the walls of your home. More specific is gifts for your children that are Christian based or perhaps even include Bible verses on them. Of course, at Logos Trading Post, we’re partial to recommend our Bible bookmarks for kids. If you’ve got a kid who loves checking out books from the library or even a kid who just has to read books for school, our Christian bookmarks are a simple, practical gift you can provide them. Every time they open any book, not just the Bible, they will be reminded of God’s living word by the encouraging words printed on their Bible verse bookmark.

What Can My Kids Teach Me?

Of course, this discussion would not be complete if we didn’t mention what your kids can teach you! As a Christian parent, it is a given that you give everything you have to raise your kids in a healthy, constructive, love-filled way, but in all your efforts, don’t miss the lessons you can learn from your children.

Jesus says in Mark 10:15, Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” Matthew records this alternatively, with the blessed Savior saying in Matthew 18:3, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” Clearly, there is something the children have figured out that many of we adults have lost sight of!

There’s no one-sentence long answer as to exactly why it is necessary to have a certain childlikeness in our faith, but 1 John 3:1 gets us on the right track. “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” Indeed, perhaps being like children is important simply because that is the relationship we are meant to have with a God, the relationship of a Father and His children. Depending on Him, taking Him at His word, and believing that He has only the best for you in store, are good ways to get started.
