The Eternal Words of God

Matthew 24:35 says, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” God’s Word is beyond powerful, outlasting the very earth we walk upon and even heaven in its current state. As such, we take the Word of God very seriously; after all, Logos Trading Post literally means “Word of God” Trading Post, based on how the word “logos” is used in the prologue of John’s Gospel. John 1:14 is a well-known example, with John writing, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

“The word of God,” and “God’s words,” see usage throughout the Bible, which happens to be God’s Word as well. That means when we find reference to God’s Word, it is two-fold in meaning, referring to both the Son of God, Jesus, and to God’s divine words found in the scriptures. Perhaps no reference better captures this two-fold aspect than Hebrews 4:12-13, in which it is written, “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of the soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” Both words of God can pierce our soul and reveal our true intentions. The scriptures expose us to the truth, and we can compare ourselves to them as a standard. However, Jesus also looks into our souls, understanding fully who we are and what motivates us even better than we understand for ourselves. The Psalmist writes in Psalm 139:23-24, “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!” Jesus knows us and our hearts, and that’s a great thing, because He understands what it is like to be us as well. After all, Hebrews 4 continues in verses 14-16, saying, “Since then we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” We need not fear then! God’s Word is for us; we believe in Him in faith, and He is faithful to us.

All that said, let us not forget the other expression of God’s Word, the Bible! The fact of the matter is, the words of scripture are divinely inspired. They were indeed written by human hands, but they are the enduring truth that God Himself wished that we would be able to read.
